The Uses of 5083 and 6061 Sheet Metal in Shipping Industry

Marine aluminum sheets are more and more widely used in the shipping industry, such as small ships, motor boats, and high-speed hovercraft. Aluminum sheet and extrusions with excellent performance are used as the hull, superstructure and various facilities, pipes and vessels.

The use of aluminum to build ships can not only protect the environment, but also bring considerable economic benefits. The structure and working environment of the ship require the material to have good corrosion resistance, weldability, plasticity and certain resistance, yield strength, ductility, impact resistance and other properties. To meet these properties, 5xxx and 6xxxx aluminum alloy are applied most.

In recent years, the mainly used 5 series aluminum alloy are 5083, 5052, 5754, 5454 and 5059. All are non-heat treatable alloys. The mechanical properties of the alloys depend on the chemical composition of the alloy and the hot rolling temperature. 5083 h111, 5083 h116 and 5083 O are available.

Although the strength loss of the heat-affected zone of the 5083 h111 after welding is smaller than that of the O temper, it is still insufficient compared with the H116 or H321 temper. Because the two states are work-hardened states and have metastable grain structures, the strength of the heat-affected zone can be better recovered through treatment.

Marine 6xxx series alloys are mainly used to produce extruded profiles, and the representative alloys are 6061 sheet metal and 6082 aluminum alloy. The 6061 aluminum plate is a representative product of the 6 series. The common tempers are T6, T651 and T652. T6 is the state of artificial aging after solution heat treatment (quenching) to improve the strength and hardness of the aluminum plate.

The main alloying elements added to the marine grade aluminum 6061 are magnesium and silicon, and sometimes a small amount of copper and zinc are added to improve the strength of the alloy. There is also a small amount of copper in the conductive material, which can offset the influence of titanium and iron on conductivity. This alloy has medium strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability, and good overall anodizing effect.

A catamaran is a conjoined ship composed of two slender hulls horizontally connected together. The hulls are connected by deck bridges, and each has an independent propulsion device. Since the two small boats are horizontally connected together, they can withstand relatively large wind and waves at sea and are not easy to capsize. At high speed, the two slender hulls can greatly reduce the drag of the hull. 6061 sheet metal is the ideal material for building catamarans.
