The Stabilization Process Of 5383 Aluminum Alloy

The working environment of ships requires structural materials with high specific strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, impact resistance and good weldability, especially for ships traveling in the marine environment, because seawater contains a large amount of Cl , a typical electrolytic solution with strong corrosive ability.

Under such strong corrosive environment and stress, marine materials are required to have excellent electrochemical corrosion and stress corrosion resistance. Among traditional materials, although steel and polymer-based composite materials have a wide application in shipbuilding.

Marine grade aluminum sheet have a series of comprehensive properties that steel and polymer materials do not possess, such as high specific strength and corrosion resistance, and excellent processing formability and weldability. The aluminum alloys used in ships are with great potential and broad prospects.

At present, the 5xxx aluminum alloy has high strength, good plasticity, corrosion resistance and weldability, and has shown its important position in the production of ship plates, ship hulls, and hull substructures. 5383 aluminum alloy is is an improved alloy of 5083 aluminum sheet. Compared with 5083 aluminum alloy, it has higher strength and better welding performance.

The Mg content in 5383 aluminum alloy is between 4.0 and 5.2%, which is prone to have corrosion failure. So it is necessary to stabilize the annealing of the 5383 aluminum plate to improve its corrosion resistance. This is one the the stabilization process:

Zr element is added on the basis of 5083 alloy composition. Zr element can combine with Al element to form Als Zr phase. This phase can effectively pin the dislocation, sub-grain boundary and grain boundary in 5383 aluminum alloy, thereby significantly improving the strength and recrystallization temperature of 5383 aluminum alloy.

Through the test under different deformation amounts and different annealing temperatures, we find that the cold rolling deformation amount of 30%~50% and the annealing temperature of 230~250℃ is the best stabilization process.
