Marine Aluminum Plate: 5083VS5059

5xxx marine aluminum plate is widely used in the superstructure of large ships, flight decks of aircraft carriers and the hull structure of all-aluminum marine ships due to their excellent corrosion resistance, machinability, weldability and good strength.

Using aluminum alloy sheet instead of conventional steel plate as the hull material can not only reduce the weight of the hull, but also make up for the failure of the steel plate due to corrosion during service.

5083 marine grade aluminum is an alloy that is widely used in shipbuilding at present, but with the increase of the society's requirements for ship strength and speed, it is difficult for this alloy to meet the requirements of performance. Therefore, ship manufacturers begin to consider other new corrosion-resistant alloys like 5059 alloy with higher Mg content.

5083 and 5059 aluminum plate belong to non-heat-treatable-strengthened aluminum alloys. The main strengthening method is work hardening. The processing technology is generally hot-rolled, cold-rolled and other processes after smelting to achieve H116 temper to meet the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Studies have shown that the stabilizing annealing process affects the compound distribution state, microstructure composition, etc. of the alloy, which in turn affects the corrosion resistance of the alloy. The factors affecting the corrosion resistance of the alloy mainly include metallographic factors and electrochemical factors.

The surface of 5083 alloy has a deformed and flat grain structure along the rolling direction, which is not favorable for increasing corrosion resistance. The surface structure of 5059 alloy is completely recrystallized, which is beneficial to enhance the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

The β-phase (Mg2Al3) of the 5083 alloy precipitates is mainly distributed continuously along the grain boundary, which is not conducive to the corrosion resistance of the alloy. 5059 alloy precipitation β phase (Mg is scattered and evenly distributed) is beneficial to the corrosion resistance of the alloy.
