In seawater corrosion experiments, the maximum depth of the corrosion pits of the 5086-H34 alloy sample is 0.86 mm, but there is no large strength loss; after 5 years, the strength loss of the fully immersed unprotected weld 5086 sample is negligible, and almost no corrosion pits are found.
In partially immersed samples, the strength loss of 3.2 mm thick unwelded 5086 is negligible regardless of the immersion conditions, which fully shows that 5086 maintains its inherent resistance to seawater stress corrosion.
In 2012, Austal US Company of the United States built the first batch of "Vigilance" all-aluminum catamaran high-speed transport ships, using 5083 aluminum alloy plates provided by Alcoa. Most of the 811.30 t aluminum alloys used in the superstructure of the US Navy's first ballistic missile destroyer "Dewey" are 5466 thick plates and 5086 thin plates.
