How to Choose Marine Grade Aluminum 6061 6063

Ships made of aluminum alloy have the advantages of fast speed, long service life, high load capacity, and low maintenance cost. Marine grade extrusions include 6061, 6063 and 6082. These types of aluminum profiles have the characteristics of high strength, corrosion resistance, good processability, and strong plasticity, and are widely used in various fields.

The commonly used aluminum alloy profiles for portholes in ship superstructures are 6063 aluminum alloy, and 6063 and 6061 aluminum alloy profiles are commonly used for masts and gangways. In terms of performance, marine grade aluminum 6061 will be better than 5052 in terms of yield strength, but 5052 is better in terms of elongation. If it is an aluminum profile, 6061 has an advantage, but if it is an aluminum plate, 5052 is better.

6061 aluminum alloy is a versatile aluminum alloy whose main alloying elements are magnesium, silicon and aluminum. It has good weldability, processability and high strength, and is widely used in aerospace, shipbuilding, pipelines, molds and other fields.

The tensile strength of 6061 aluminum plate is between 110-130 MPa, which is higher than most plastic materials and has high yield strength. Therefore, it is widely used in the production of structural parts and load-bearing parts.

6063 aluminum is similar to 6061 in terms of silicon content, but contains less copper and magnesium.

6063 aluminum alloy belongs to the 6 series alloy, which is an alloy of aluminum, magnesium and silicon. The magnesium content is between 0.45-0.9% and the silicon content is between 0.2-0.6%. 6063 aluminum has excellent corrosion resistance. If it is surface treated, its anti-oxidation ability can be maximized. It can be used in harsh outdoor environments for more than 25 years.

6063 aluminum plate is a low-alloyed Al-Mg-Si high-plasticity alloy. The T5 and T6 hardness states of 6063 aluminum plate are both heat treatment methods. The hardness of T5 is lower than the hardness of T6. The hardness of 6063T6 aluminum plate is slightly lower than that of 6061T6 aluminum plate. Usually the hardness of 6063T6 can reach around 85HB.

Haomei Aluminum has both 6061 and 6063 aluminum sheet/profile. If you don’t know which to choose, welcome to leave message to tell us. Our sales will give you their professional suggestion after getting your requirements.
