The Use of 5456 Aluminum Sheet in Shipbuilding
According to different manufacturing processes, marine aluminum plates can be divided into deformed aluminum plates and cast aluminum plates. Because marine aluminum plates have special requirements for strength, corrosion resistance, and weldability, 5xxx aluminum alloy is widely used.
There are mainly three types of 5xxx aluminum alloys: 5083, 5086, and 5456 aluminum sheet. The 6xxx aluminum will have intergranular corrosion in seawater, so it is only used fro the superstructure. The 7xxx aluminum has the disadvantage of poor corrosion resistance, so the range of use is limited. On the whole, the 5xxx marine grade aluminum is currently the most widely used alloy in the shipbuilding.
The typical case of aluminum alloy used for hovercraft is the US Navy’s "3KSES". The ship is a fully welded aluminum structure. In the selection of materials, 5456 aluminum plate with H116 and H117 may be used. It is also possible that the welded parts may be made of Al-Cu-Mn 2219 alloy with higher strength, and the non-weld parts may be made of high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu 7075-T73 alloy.
The ship is the largest fully welded aluminum hull ship with the largest tonnage. The selection of materials is of course extremely cautious. The 5456-H116 or -H117 alloy was finally rated as the best material for the main shell structure due to the advantages of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and low cost.
