Marine Grade Aluminum VS Aluminum

Compared with common aluminum alloys, the marine grade aluminum has better corrosion resistance. Al-Mg alloy is the most widely used marine grade aluminum, which has lower density than common aluminum, excellent resistance to marine climate and seawater corrosion, weldability and polishability, and excellent plasticity (Mg≤5% ), as well as good seismic performance, and higher fatigue strength than tat of duralumin.

In the chemical composition of aluminum-magnesium alloys used in marine engineering, the maximum magnesium content of 5052 alloy with low magnesium content is only 2.8%, and the content of 5083 alloy with the highest magnesium content is 4.9%. Although the strength of aluminum alloy increase due to the increase of Mg content, the plasticity and corrosion resistance decrease significantly, especially for alloys with Mg>6%.

Deformed aluminum alloys used in marine engineering include 5052 (5A02), 5252, 5154, 5454, 5754, 5083, 5086, 5059,etc. Among them, the magnesium content of the 5052 alloy is the lowest, the second group is 5154, 5454 and 5754 alloys, the magnesium content of the 5083 alloy is moderately high, 5059 aluminum has the highest magnesium content.

5059 aluminum plate is a 5xxx Al-Mg aluminum alloy with good corrosion resistance and tensile strength. It has excellent overall performance and is currently recognized as the most technically difficult high-end marine aluminum alloy, which is widely used in ships, oil tankers and other fields.

A new generation of marine engineering deformed aluminum alloy 5059 was developed in 1999 by Crus Aluminum Company (now Aleris Aluminum Company) and registered with the American Aluminum Association (AA). It is an excellent marine engineering aluminum alloy. The alloy has been used in the manufacture of cruise ships and various ships that can carry 7,000 passengers, as well as LNG ship.

Compared with the traditional 5083 alloy, the impurity Si, Fe, and Mn contents of 5059 aluminum are slightly higher, and the average content of Mg is 24% higher than that of the 5083 alloy. Zn is an impurity in 5083 alloy, but it is a trace alloying element in 5059 alloy, and 5059 alloy also contains 0.05% Zr~0.25% Zr.

Due to these differences in composition, the properties of aluminum 5059 are overall better than those of alloy 5083, but but due to its high magnesium content, its press working and forming properties are slightly inferior. Welcome to leave message below to inquire what you need.
