Different Alloys of Aluminum for Marine Application

Marine aluminum alloy has been used in the shipbuilding industry for nearly a hundred years. With the rapid development of domestic and foreign shipbuilding industries, the lightweight of ships has been paid more and more attention. Due to the low density, high strength, high rigidity and corrosion resistance of aluminum, so the application effect of aluminum for ships on ships is very significant.

Due to the different environments and forces of different structural parts of marine engineering equipment, 1 to 8 different series of aluminum alloys have been developed according to actual applications, of which 2 series, 5 series, 6 series and 7 series aluminum alloys are the most important alloys for marine engineering.

2000 series aluminum alloy is a kind of hard alloy, which is mainly divided into Al-Cu series and Al-Cu-Mg series. 2024-T4 belongs to the Al-Cu-Mg system, non-magnetic, and its hardness is about HB120-145. It is the main material of offshore oil drill pipes and is used to exploit offshore oil and natural gas resources.

5000 series belongs to Al-Mg alloy, which are divided into different grades according to the content of the Mg. 5000 aluminum alloys are widely used in the field of marine engineering because of their excellent corrosion resistance. Aluminum 5059 is currently recognized as the most technically difficult high-end marine aluminum alloy in the industry. The strength index of 5059 aluminum alloy and its welding performance are the highest.

In the process of ocean transportation, liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks have strict requirements on material performance, and it is necessary to ensure that the strength, mechanical properties and corrosion properties of the material are not affected at low temperature.

5083 aluminium alloy can meet the above conditions at the same time. It is the main manufacturing material for offshore low-temperature storage devices such as combustible ice and natural gas.

6000 aluminum alloys belong to Al-Mg-Si alloy, which have the advantages of good plasticity and processing performance. They are forged into profiles and plates through punching, extrusion and other processes, and can be applied to ship decks, shell structures, and ship superstructures.

7000 aluminum alloy is a kind of high-strength and tough alloy. It was originally developed as an aerospace material, and later it was gradually used in rail transportation, shipbuilding and other fields. In marine engineering, deep submersibles, torpedo shells and their launchers often use 7000 aluminum alloys.
