In shipbuilding, a field that combines precision engineering with extreme environmental challenges, aluminum and aluminum alloys, with their outstanding advantages such as lightweight, corrosion resistance, and ease of processing, have become an ideal alternative to traditional steel. Aluminum tubes, as core components, play a vital role in critical parts of a ship's hydraulic, cooling, and ventilation systems.

Aluminum round tubes
In the fluid transport systems of ships, such as hydraulic transmission, fuel delivery, and seawater cooling, aluminum round tubes are the absolute mainstay. Their circular cross-section provides uniform stress distribution, effectively reducing fluid resistance and pressure loss, while also facilitating pipe bending, welding, and connection. Currently, the most widely used aluminum round tubes in shipbuilding are mainly concentrated in the following two grades:
6061-T6 Aluminum Round Tubes: This is the "all-rounder" in the shipbuilding field. 6061 aluminum alloy uses magnesium and silicon as the main alloying elements. After T6 heat treatment, it not only possesses excellent strength (tensile strength can reach over 310MPa), but also good corrosion resistance and weldability.
In ship hydraulic lines and steering gear control systems, 6061-T6 aluminum tube stock can withstand high operating pressures while resisting corrosion from hydraulic oil and seawater vapor, ensuring stable and reliable power transmission.
5083-H112 aluminum round tubes: It is a true "corrosion-resistant pioneer." 5083 aluminum alloy, with magnesium as its main alloying element, is a rust-resistant aluminum alloy with particularly outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion, even surpassing some stainless steels.
For cooling lines and ballast water system lines that come into direct contact with seawater, 5083-H112 aluminum round tubes effectively resist electrochemical and erosive corrosion from seawater, extending pipeline lifespan and reducing ship maintenance costs. Furthermore, its excellent low-temperature performance allows for stable operation in ships navigating in cold waters.
Aluminum square tubes
Compared to aluminum round tubes, aluminum square tubes have a larger moment of inertia and superior torsional and bending resistance, making them more suitable for structural support components in ships, such as cabin partition frames, deck support beams, and railing columns.
In shipbuilding, there is some overlap between the commonly used aluminum square tube grades and round tube grades, but a greater emphasis is placed on structural strength and stability:
6063-T5 Aluminum Square Tube: This is a common choice for structural aluminum square tubes. 6063 aluminum alloy, also alloyed with magnesium and silicon, has excellent machinability and can be extruded into square tubes of various specifications. It has a high surface smoothness, facilitating subsequent assembly and painting.
After T5 heat treatment, its strength meets the structural support requirements of ships, while its weight is only about 1/3 that of steel of the same specification, effectively reducing the ship's hull weight and improving sailing speed and fuel economy. 6063-T5 aluminum square tubes are widely used in ship interior frames, equipment supports, and other components.
6082-T6 Aluminum Square Tube: For structural components with higher load-bearing requirements, 6082-T6 aluminum square tubes are more suitable. It is an optimized alloy based on 6061, with higher strength (tensile strength can reach over 380MPa) and excellent fatigue resistance.
6082 aluminum square stock is commonly used in ship superstructure supports, hatch coaming, and other parts that need to withstand large loads. Its good weldability also ensures the robustness of structural connections, providing a guarantee for the safety of ship structures.
Core requirements for marine aluminum tubes
Ships face multiple challenges in the marine environment, including salt spray corrosion, temperature fluctuations, and vibration impacts. Therefore, the quality requirements for aluminum tubes are far higher than those for ordinary industrial aluminum tubes, and they must meet the stringent standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and national classification societies (such as the China Classification Society (CCS) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
