6082 Alloy and 5182 Welding Wire for Aluminum Boat Structure

6082 aluminum alloy belongs to the 6000 series aluminum alloy. It is an aluminum alloy plate that can be heat treated and strengthened. It has medium strength, good welding performance and corrosion resistance, which is widely used in transportation and structural engineering, such as bridges, cranes, roof structures, aircraft, ships, etc.

In recent years, with the rapid development of the shipbuilding industry at home and abroad, reducing the weight of the ship hull, increasing the ship speed, and seeking aluminum alloy materials to replace steel parts have become important issues facing the aluminum processing industry and shipbuilding industry. 6082 aluminum sheet and extrusion is an ideal material for manufacturing high-speed ship parts.

6082 aluminum alloy is used in the form of aluminum rod, plate, pipe and profile. 6082 aluminum alloy plate is an aluminum plate that can increase its hardness through aging treatment. As a relatively new alloy, 6082 has higher strength and has replaced 6061 in many applications. The addition of large amounts of manganese controls the grain structure, making the alloy stronger.

6082-t6 is a main temper of 6082 aluminum alloy. 6082-t6 aluminum is a medium strength alloy with good strength and corrosion resistance. What are 6082 t6 properties?

  • Mechanical properties: Brinell hardness of 69 GPa and 10 x 106 psi

  • Thermal properties: Latent heat of fusion of 410 J/g and 170 °C

  • Density: 2.7 g/cm3

  • Modulus of elasticity: 70 GPa

  • Melting point: 555 °C

  • Electrical resistivity: 0.038x10-6 Ω.m

5182 welding wire is generally used as filler metal for ALMg4.5Mn alloy. It contains: 4.3-5.0% magnesium, 0.5-1.0% manganese and appropriate chromium and titanium. It can be used for MIG or TIG welding of spools or longitudinal cuts in industries such as ships, drilling equipment, trains, automobiles, storage tanks and pressure vessels. Applicable base metals include 5083, 5086, 5456, 5052, 5652 and 5056. The color of ER5183 after anodization is white, the melting point temperature is 1075-1180 ℉. The tensile strength of the weldd is 294 MP.

The selection of the aluminum welding wire is mainly based on the type of base material and comprehensive consideration of the crack resistance, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the joint.

For example, under normal circumstances, welding aluminum and aluminum alloys use welding wires with the same or similar grade as the base material, so that better corrosion resistance can be obtained. However, when welding heat treatment-strengthened aluminum alloys with a high tendency of thermal cracks, the choice of welding wire is mainly based on crack resistance. At this time, the composition of the welding wire can be very different from that of the base metal.
