6000 Grade Aluminium in Shipbuilding

6000 grade aluminum alloys, with magnesium and silicon as primary alloying elements, are heat-treatable and hardenable aluminum alloys. They combine excellent strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and processability. Their density is only about one-third that of steel, significantly reducing ship weight and improving speed and fuel efficiency. This makes them an ideal alternative to traditional steel in the modern shipbuilding industry, which strives for high efficiency and energy conservation. They are widely used in key areas such as superstructures, decks, side structures, and cabin components.
6061 aluminum alloy
The most commonly used tempers for 6061 aluminum alloy in marine applications are T6 and T651, with T4 also being used in some applications.
6061 t6: After solution treatment and artificial aging, 6061 t6 aluminum alloy is one of the strongest grades, achieving a tensile strength of up to 276 MPa and a yield strength of approximately 241 MPa. It also exhibits good hardness and fatigue resistance. However, 6061 T6 aluminum has relatively low ductility, making processing slightly more difficult. It is therefore more suitable for components requiring high strength and requiring no complex secondary processing after forming.
6061 t651: Based on the T6 temper, a stretch straightening process is added to effectively eliminate residual stress within the material, reducing the risk of deformation during subsequent processing or use. Its performance stability is superior to that of the T6 temper, making it the preferred temper for components requiring high-precision assembly in ships.
6061 t4: After solution treatment and natural aging, the material exhibits excellent ductility (elongation exceeding 20%), making it suitable for complex forming processes such as bending and stamping. Artificial aging can be performed as needed to increase strength, making it suitable for the manufacture of complex, lightweight components in ships.
Due to its moderate strength and excellent processability, 6061 aluminum alloy is primarily used in non-critical load-bearing areas within ships, where lightweighting and formability are crucial. For example, these areas don't bear significant loads, but require reduced weight to lower the ship's center of gravity. 6061 aluminum alloy is also used in components such as pipe supports and small equipment bases. Its excellent seawater corrosion resistance ensures long-term stability in marine environments.
6082 aluminum alloy
6082 aluminum alloy is the strongest grade in the 6 series. In marine applications, it's primarily used in the T6 and T6511 grades, with the T8 grade also used in some heavy-duty applications.
Material 6082 t6: 6082-T6 has a tensile strength of up to 310 MPa and a yield strength of approximately 270 MPa, making it 10%-15% stronger than 6061-T6. It also offers excellent shear and fatigue resistance, and can withstand certain impact loads, making it the preferred steel for load-bearing components in ships. However, its weldability requires special attention, and local aging treatment is required after welding to restore strength.
6082-t6511: Based on the T6 temper, this alloy undergoes a special stretching treatment, resulting in a more uniform grain structure and enhanced resistance to stress corrosion cracking. It is particularly suitable for load-bearing components used in marine environments with high humidity and salt spray, effectively preventing corrosion cracking caused by stress concentration.
6082-t8: Through solution treatment, cold working, and strengthening, followed by artificial aging, it achieves higher strength than the T6 temper (tensile strength up to 340 MPa), but with reduced ductility. It is primarily used in critical load-bearing components within ships, such as side support beams and deck longitudinals on small vessels.
Due to its high strength and excellent load-bearing capacity, 6082 aluminum alloy is primarily used in load-bearing structural components within ships. In high-speed passenger ships or yachts, 6082 aluminum alloy can also be used for the hull frame structure.
